Thermopure is a nutritional supplement marketed by the well-known brand, Myprotein. From the company website, it is not clear what this product is exactly. Is it a fat burner is a pre-workout supplement? It is not clear at first glance and Myprotein makes no definite statements about it. So let’s have a closer look at this fitness supplement and find out a bit more about it.

The minimalist look of the bottle doesn’t give away much either. No strong colours or big statements.

Pros

  • Contains some effective thermogenics – green tea and caffeine
  • No proprietary blend
  • Good daily dosage with 3 capsules per day
  • Cheaper than competitor products
  • Doesn’t contain controversial ingredients

Cons

Well, this is a hard one. The cons really depend on what you want to achieve using this product.

If you are looking to use it as a fat burner there are a couple of issues.

  • Low amounts of caffeine and green tea extract
  • No appetite suppressant ingredient in the formula

However, if you want to take it as a pre-workout supplement it is missing some key ingredients.

  • Creatine Monohydrate is widely used by effective pre-workout supplements. It helps build lean muscle mass as well as increase strength and performance.
  • L-Citrulline Dl-Malate is also a key ingredient of good pre-workout products. It helps reduce fatigue and improve endurance during exercise.

What other people say about this product

There are a lot of customer reviews on the Myprotein website. Nearly 60% of those who left a review rated it 5 out of 5 stars which is very positive. Whilst only 13% of those who commented on this product rated it 1, 2 or 3 stars.

There are also a few reviews on Amazon. Most of these are 4 or 5 stars with only the odd 1-star review. This is all very promising.

Dosage – How to take Myprotein Thermopure?

The company recommends taking 3 capsules a day on an empty stomach before exercise. On non-exercise days, they advise taking 1 capsule in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Taking 3 capsules per day helps with the even supply of ingredients throughout the day. This is a definite bonus when it comes to effective fat burning.

If you are taking it as a pre-workout supplement, the capsule form may be an easier option. It is certainly more convenient than mixing a powder into a liquid. It also means that there is no need for flavour enhancers as in the case of powder form supplements.

Cost

Myprotein Thermopure is a very competitively priced product. 1 bottle of 90 capsules will cost you £15.49 if you order it from the company’s website. The larger bottle of 180 capsules will cost you only £25.99. This is a bargain price if you look at other fat burner products.

Even if you consider it as a pre-workout supplement, it is a lot cheaper than most products out there.

Ingredients

The simple, clear design is also reflected in the ingredients list of this product. No proprietary blend in sight. Just a simple list of ingredients and their amounts clearly visible on the bottle.

Main Ingredients

The main ingredients in this nutritional supplement are thermogenics. This means that they increase the body’s metabolism and help it burn more fat faster. This is the main feature of this product.

Green tea extract and caffeine are both natural thermogenic ingredients. There is plenty of research evidence that these are safe and effective ingredients supporting fat burning1,2,3.

The amount of green tea extract (375mg per 3 capsules) and caffeine (150mg per 3 capsules) are both on the low side if you want to take this product as a fat burner. Effective fat burners contain around 500mg of green tea extract per daily dose. With regards to optimal dosage of caffeine, good fat burners contain somewhere between 250 and 300 mg in a daily serving.

Thermopure also contains an amino acid, L-Tyrosine (200mg per 3 capsules). It occurs naturally in our bodies but we can also get it from eating meat, fish, eggs, beans and nuts amongst other foods.

There are some studies out there that investigate an implied link between L-Tyrosine and improved mental performance, alertness, or memory as well as improved physical performance. However, these studies haven’t found enough supporting evidence for this link4,5.

Finally, the formula also contains L-Theanine (125mg per 3 capsules). It is an amino acid found in tea. As I’ve said above, a number of studies have proven the effectiveness of green tea specifically as a weight loss ingredient. However, studies also showed that when L-Theanine is combined with caffeine, it helped to improve cognitive functions. So L-Theanine is a natural and safe stimulant. However, it also naturally boosts brain activity when combined with caffeine.

Due to this additional benefit, it has been a choice of ingredients in some pre-workout products.

Supporting Ingredients

As well as the four main ingredients, Thremopure also contains a number of supporting ingredients.

There is a small amount of cayenne powder (50mg per 3 capsules) in the formula. The active ingredient of cayenne powder is capsaicin. It is an effective thermogenic6but there are also some studies that have shown that it has appetite suppressant properties. However, it is not as effective as other natural appetite suppressants like glucomannan7,8.

The formula also contains a small amount of black pepper extract (5mg per 3 capsules) which helps enhance the effectiveness of the other ingredients.

Finally, it also contains B6 and B12 vitamins as well as Chromium.

Potential side effects of Myprotein Thermopure

If you are sensitive or allergic to caffeine or chilies, Thermopure could cause some side effects. However, the amount of caffeine and cayenne powder in the formula is quite low. So it is less likely to cause problems.

Final Verdict on Myprotein Thermopure

This is a difficult one. If I look at this product as a fat burner I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars. However, if I was reviewing it as a pre-workout, I’d give it 4 stars. So, on the whole, I’d give it 3.5 stars.

It is not a bad product in any case. Clear ingredients list with amounts. No proprietary blend or nasty ingredients.

Some effective ingredients, but the amounts could be improved for a better fat-burning effect. The formula could also do with some additional proven ingredients.

The price is great and the dosage is too.

The reviews are certainly more favourable as a pre-workout and I’d lean towards using it for that effect rather than as a fat burner.
